Erectile dysfunction is the inability to maintain an erection sufficient for sexual activity. In most cases, you still have normal sensations in your penis and can achieve orgasm and ejaculation.

Your doctor at Fairbanks Urology is likely to recommend lifestyle changes for erectile dysfunction treatment. These changes may include:
- Losing weight
- Quitting smoking
- Sufficient exercise
- Oral medication to help you achieve and maintain an erection
If these methods aren’t successful, your doctor may try other therapies, including:
- A vacuum device
- Penile injection therapy
- Intraurethral medications
If these treatments still don’t help you achieve a satisfactory erection, you could be a candidate for a penile prosthesis.
WHAT IS A PENILE PROSTHESIS?
A penile prosthesis is a device implanted into the erection chamber of your penis. These devices help produce an erection-like state, enabling you to have sex. The prosthesis doesn’t interfere with penile sensations, orgasms, ejaculation, or urination.
Two types of penile prosthesis are available:
SPECTRA IMPLANT
Your doctor implants a pair of semi-rigid cylinders inside your penis. You can easily lift the implant manually for intercourse, then push it down when not in use.
INFLATABLE IMPLANTS
There are several inflatable varieties of penile prostheses. Your doctor implants a pair of cylinders into your penis and a pump inside your scrotum. He also inserts a reservoir of saline solution into your lower abdomen.
By squeezing and releasing the pump, the saline fluid moves into the cylinders to create an erection. When intercourse concludes, you can deflate the cylinders using the button on top of the pump and return your penis to its flaccid state.
